Life

I grew up in the country on a farm in Northeastern Indiana. I worked on the farm for a year after high school before I started collage.

I got my Bachelors degree in Computer Science from the Purdue University extension in Fort Wayne, Indiana (IPFW). During my last two years of my undergraduate degree and three years after graduation I worked as a programmer in Fort Wayne working for OPN: Systems. I went back to school in 1994 and got a Masters degree in Computer Science from Michigan State University. I stayed at MSU after graduation working for the Comm Tech Lab and the Virtual University. In 2001 I went back to school again (do you see a pattern forming?) and I'm currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Science from Indiana University.

I'm a geek, but I hide it fairly well and I even have a few non-computer related hobbies mainly revolving around music, photography, and dancing. I enjoy movies, concerts, and the theater. I've recently been exposed to opera through the Indiana University School of Music, which is an excellent music school and their opera performances are very good.

Dancing

For some reason most people are surprised when I tell them I've been dancing for about ten years. I've learned the basics of most American style ballroom dances, most swing variations, many Latin dances, and the hustle (the partner dance not the line dance).

Photography

I've enjoyed photography for years and went completely digital years ago. I also do some digital manipulation of images.

Music

I've played musical instruments most of my life. Early on I learned piano and I played trumpet through high school. Recently I started learning the tenor saxophone. I've always wanted to learn the saxophone and I was looking for something to use as a diversion that was not related to school or the computer.
